+ | Gĕguritan is a form of metered poem in vernacular language. ''Gĕguritan Nĕngah Jimbaran'' is a poem that was first composed in 1903 by Cokorda Made Agung Pamecutan (1876-1906), the last ruler of Badung Kingdom in southern Bali which was known at the time as an accomplished poet (Agastia 1994, 88). This gĕguritan is written almost entirely in the Malay language, an interesting decision that sets it apart from common Balinese gĕguritan (Putra 2016). Due to its language, this poem contains several spelling that may seem unusual to contemporary Balinese users: akara with adĕg-adĕg [ᬅ᭄]. This combination is used to indicate glottal stop and is attested in literature of the neighboring Sasak Island, however it is not commonly taught in the Island of Bali. (Suatjana;Everson 2005)

+ | This gĕguritan tells the story of Nĕngah Jimbaran, who lost his wife during a cholera outbreak. In his sadness, he mourns beside his wife's grave for days until a manifestation of the God Bhaṭāra Śiwa descends upon him. Bhaṭāra Śiwa tells Jimbaran to seek a small pura and find an old man residing within. Jimbaran finds the pura and man in question, where the old man then proceeds to take Jimbaran to the afterlife. In the afterlife, Jimbaran manages to find his wife's soul, but she tells Jimbaran to quickly go back to the land of living as it is not his time yet to step his foot in the grave. Jimbaran manages to go back to the land of the living, where he learns to accept his wife's death. After the story is finished, the poet lightheartedly acknowledges that he indeed compose this piece deliberately in Malay but with many mixed in words, for it is difficult for him to follow the meter using pure Malay, and that many of his Balinese peers at the time "did not fully understood Malay, let alone use it in a refined manner".

Description
Bahasa Indonesia

Gĕguritan is a form of metered poem in vernacular language. Gĕguritan Nĕngah Jimbaran is a poem that was first composed in 1903 by Cokorda Made Agung Pamecutan (1876-1906), the last ruler of Badung Kingdom in southern Bali which was known at the time as an accomplished poet (Agastia 1994, 88).
This gĕguritan tells the story of Nĕngah Jimbaran, who lost his wife during a cholera outbreak.
The manuscript was completed on śaka year 1854.
