The details of the ceremony differs a bit from place to place, but usually involves the claimant and the accused taking an oath overseen by a local priest and drinking a pouring of water infused with mantras and the aforementioned oath. The party that lied, cheated, or in any way broke the oath in this dispute would be subsequently cursed for several generations should this ceremony is completed. This practice of "drinking oath" is an attested practice since antiquity, as shown in the 7th century Srivijayan ''Telaga Batu'' inscription.

Lontar Cor berisi mantra yang digunakan dalam upacara Sumpah Cor. Upacara ini biasanya dilaksanakan sebagai upaya terakhir dalam sebuah perselisihan yang tidak terselesaikan. Tata cara upacara ini sedikit berbeda antar satu tempat dengan lainnya, namun garis besarnya terdiri dari pihak penuntut dan tertuntut meminum air yang telah dibacakan sumpah dan mantra dari masing-masing pihak di hadapan seorang pendeta.
